You can read every guide to candlesticks, support and resistance, RSI and moving averages, and still freeze the first time you look at a live chart. Chart reading is a skill, and skills come from practice with feedback. The problem is that practising on live markets with real money is slow and expensive. This guide shows a safer routine: bar replay on the free StockYatra charts page to train your eye, then paper trading in the StockYatra app to practise decisions, all without risking a single rupee.
In short
- Bar replay hides the newer candles so you can guess what happens next, then reveal it. Instant feedback, no waiting.
- Write your call down before you step forward. Keep score; your hit rate matters less than your reasons.
- Practise one idea per session: candles, levels, one indicator, or one chart type.
- Then move to paper trading with stop-losses and position sizes, so you practise decisions, not just reading.
- StockYatra prices are simulated and coins are virtual. It is practice, not a way to make money.
Why bar replay is the fastest way to learn
On a normal chart you see the whole history at once, so every pattern looks obvious in hindsight. Bar replay removes hindsight. It cuts the chart off at a point in the past and hides everything after it. You look at what a trader would have seen at that moment, make a call, then step forward one candle and find out if you were right. Instead of waiting days for a live market to answer, you get dozens of answers in a few minutes.
Step 1: Open the charts page and pick one stock
Go to stockyatra.com/charts. It is free and needs no sign-up. Pick a stock from the watchlist; Nepal, India and Forex boards are all there. Choose one you have no opinion about, so you are not tempted to see what you want to see. Start on the daily (1D) or 1-hour timeframe; very short timeframes are too noisy to learn on.
Step 2: Set up a clean chart
Keep it simple. Use plain candlesticks, and either remove indicators or load the Beginner template. You can always add more later. If you are working on one specific idea, add only that: two moving averages for a crossover session, or RSI for a momentum session.
Step 3: Start bar replay
Press Replay in the chart toolbar. The newer candles disappear and a replay bar appears with these controls:
- Back one bar and forward one bar buttons to step a single candle at a time.
- A play/pause button that advances automatically, at 1x, 2x, 5x or 10x speed.
- A slider to jump to any point in the history, and a counter showing which candle you are on and its date.
- Exit to return to the live chart.
Use the slider to jump to a point where you cannot remember what happened next. Then stop touching the slider; from here on, only step forward.
Step 4: Write down your read before every step
This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that matters. Before you step forward, write one line in a notebook or phone note:
- Trend: up, down or sideways? (Higher highs and lows, lower highs and lows, or a range.)
- Nearest levels: where is the nearest support and resistance? Draw them with the line or rectangle tool.
- Call: what do you expect over the next five candles, and why?
- Invalidation: what would prove you wrong? For example, "a daily close below the support zone".
Writing forces honesty. Without it, your memory quietly edits your guesses to look better than they were.
Step 5: Step forward and score yourself
Step forward one candle at a time, or play at 1x or 2x, until your five candles are done or your invalidation is hit. Mark the result: right, wrong, or unclear. Then, more importantly, note whether your reason was right. Being right for the wrong reason is luck. Being wrong for a good reason is still useful: it tells you the setup is less reliable than you thought. Do ten calls per session. After a few sessions, read back through your notes and look for patterns in your mistakes.
Step 6: Practise one skill per session
Rotate through focused sessions rather than doing everything at once:
- Candles session: only read candles and wicks. No indicators at all.
- Levels session: draw zones before replay, then watch how price behaves at each.
- Indicator session: one indicator only. Note every signal and whether it worked.
- Chart-type session: repeat the same replay on Heikin Ashi or Renko and compare how early or late each one showed the move.
If you get stuck, ask Lumi AI on the charts page to explain the current chart in plain English or Nepali. It describes trend, momentum and levels; it never tells you to buy or sell. Treat its answer as a second opinion to compare with your own notes.
Step 7: Move to paper trading in the app
Reading a chart and acting on it are different skills. Once your replay notes start to make sense, download StockYatra on iPhone or Android, or use the web trade terminal. You start with 10,000 virtual coins. Now practise the full decision: entry, a stop-loss at your invalidation level, a target, and a position size that would lose only a small part of your balance if you are wrong. Keep the same written notes. Read more about why this matters in what paper trading is and our paper vs real trading guide.
Final check: what paper trading cannot teach you
Be honest about the limits. StockYatra's practice prices are a simulation that moves around each stock's real-world price level; they are not official exchange quotes. Fills are instant, and there are no real-world frictions like thin order books. Most importantly, virtual coins do not feel like your savings. A good practice record shows you have a method and the discipline to follow it, not that you will make money in a real market. If you ever trade with real money, start very small and expect it to feel harder.
Key takeaways
- Use bar replay to hide the future, write a call, step forward and score it.
- Write down trend, levels, call and invalidation before every step.
- One skill per session; review your notes for repeated mistakes.
- Then paper trade with stops and sensible sizes. Practice builds method, not guarantees.
Education only, not investment advice. StockYatra is a learning app: prices on its practice market are simulated around each stock's real-world price level, coins are virtual, and nothing in this article is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Every example uses made-up round numbers to explain an idea, not to describe a real stock.
