Trading automation, without the hype.
From a simple price alert to a bot that trades through your broker's API, automation is a ladder. Here is each rung, how webhooks and APIs connect them, the risks no sales page mentions, and what the rules allow in India, the US and Nepal.
Six kinds of trading automation
Climb one rung at a time. Each step adds speed and adds ways to lose money by mistake.
The safest automation: the computer watches, you decide. Price crosses a level, an indicator fires, you get a notification.
A rule prepares the order (size, stop, target) and waits for your tap to send it.
Your program logs in to your broker's API and places, changes and cancels orders by itself.
A chart or scanner sends an HTTP message when a condition hits; a small server turns that message into an action.
Visual rule builders and strategy platforms that create the logic without code. The risks stay the same.
The same automation pointed at virtual money, to see how it behaves before anything real is at stake.
How an automated order travels
- 1TriggerA rule fires on new data: a price, an indicator, a time.
- 2ChecksIs the market open? Within size and daily-loss limits? Not a duplicate?
- 3API callAn authenticated request to the broker with the order details.
- 4Broker & exchangeRisk checks, then the order reaches the exchange and fills or waits.
- 5Log & monitorRecord everything; alert a human when something looks wrong.
What goes wrong with bots
A typo in size or a loop that resends an order can do more damage in a minute than a bad trade in a month.
A frozen feed or a wrong price makes a perfect rule do the wrong thing.
Your internet, server or broker can drop mid-trade. Know what happens to open orders when it does.
Automation makes it cheap to trade too often; fees and slippage add up quietly.
API keys are passwords to your money. Never share them with a bot seller or paste them into unknown tools.
“Done-for-you” bots with guaranteed returns. Real automation never guarantees anything.

Trading automation FAQ
What is trading automation?
Using software to do parts of trading for you: watching prices, sending alerts, preparing orders or placing them through a broker's API. It ranges from simple price alerts to fully automatic bots.
Are trading bots legal?
It depends on the country and broker. In India, automated orders must go through SEBI's retail algo framework via your broker (algo IDs, static IP, two-factor login). In the US, many brokers offer APIs. In Nepal, SEBON told NEPSE in August 2026 to stop AI-based order entry on TMS platforms until it is studied, so automating NEPSE orders is not an option for now.
What is a webhook in trading?
A message one app sends to another over the internet when something happens, for example a chart alert firing. A small server can receive it and turn it into an action such as a notification or an order.
What is a kill switch?
A way to stop all automated orders at once. Indian exchanges can halt an algo by its ID, brokers have their own, and every personal bot should have one you can hit from your phone.
Should beginners automate trading?
Start with alerts and paper trading. Automating a strategy you have not tested only makes you lose faster. Learn the rules, backtest them honestly, paper trade, then consider automation.
Does StockYatra have a trading bot?
Not yet. Today you can build rules without code or in Pine Script, see every signal on the chart and backtest them, and place Market, Limit and Stop orders on virtual coins. A paper-trading bot that runs your rules automatically is on our roadmap.
StockYatra is an education app with virtual coins, not a broker, adviser or research analyst. Rules summarised here are for learning and change over time; check your regulator's and broker's current notices before acting. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell any security or to use any trading product.
